Pile Works in Nizhny Novgorod Are In Progress

General contractor PJSC “STG” has performed approx. 60% of the pile work volume at the first stage of the stadium construction in Nizhny Novgorod. The future stadium will host matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Anvar Karsakov, Director for Execution of Nizhny Novgorod Stadium Project, and Andrey Litskevich, Chief Expert on Structural Concepts, told about the work progress.

At present ground levelling activities, service roads and lighting system are arranged on the construction site. One-storey canteen building, two-storey office building and administrative facilities connected by heated link building are almost completed. Utility systems and working equipment are being installed in the buildings.

At the first stage which is to last till the mid of 2016 reinforced concrete structures of the stadium shall be erected including foundation and floor structures resting thereupon. The total volume of the reinforced concrete structures under the project will reach 140,000 cub. m with the foundation accounting for 86,000.

The Nizhny Novgorod stadium project stipulates pile foundation which represents bearing piles embedded into the soil with the horizontal reinforced concrete plate resting thereupon called grillage. Exploration works on the future construction site located in the city centre have discovered a man-made soil column. Such soil does not ensure necessary bearing capacity, therefore the designer engineers have decided to put in the pilings till the continental ground. This is the distinctive feature of the stadium in Volgograd which is also being constructed by PJSC “STG”: a monolith reinforced concrete foundation is organized there.

Installation of the pile field for the foundation is in progress: as of June 3 5,440 piles out of 9,847 are sunk. At the same time pit excavation till the design level and pile trimming (i.e. removal of concrete parts of the piles projecting above the pit bottom) have begun. The total volume of soil excavation under the project will reach 64,000 cub.m.

Foundation works (grillage installation) will start prior to the end of June, for this purpose concrete will be poured into the pit. The concrete slab thickness will vary from 1 to 2 meters in different locations. Concrete foundation acquires strength within 28 days in average, afterwards, approximately in August, construction workers will be able to start erection of reinforced concrete bearing structures of the first floor. Columns and walls will be the first, then horizontal beams, floor decks and stands will be arranged. Grillage installation works and erection of reinforced concrete framing will be performed gradually, on a site-by-site basis.

The second construction stage will start early in 2016. This stage includes erection of the metal structures of the stadium: floor framing, roofing. The total weight thereof will amount to 13,000 tons. At the third stage which is to begin at the end of 2016 a reinforced concrete rack encircling the stadium will be erected being the way for visitors to get into the stadium.

The stadium with the operating name Volga - Arena is being under construction in the Strelka district where the Oka river joins Volga. The stadium capacity will be 45,000 spectators. The facility shall be commissioned in November 2017, however, PJSC “STG” plans to complete the construction two months earlier, in September 2017.
