A visiting meeting was held on 15 June by Valery Shantsev, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, at the construction site of the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium being built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Valery Shantsev said that in June constructors had set up a new record among the stadiums being constructed in Russia. “I was informed that 379 cubic meters of concreting had been done each day, which accounted for a total of 5 thousand tonnes of in-situ concreting of the highest quality for 15 days,” Valery Shantsev said.

In the course of the working meeting the issue of accessibility of the future arena for handicapped persons was discussed.

As Deputy Governor Dmitry Svatkovsky reported, the stadium will include special elevators, stairlifts, and ramps aimed at handicapped persons: “Special turnstiles will be functioning at the entrance, so that people in wheelchairs will be able to buy tickets themselves. Besides, food courts and lavatories will be equipped as per the accessible environment requirements.”

According to Sergey Pichushkin, head of JSC Stroytransgaz stadium construction project, the arena will meet all of the modern accessible environment requirements for handicapped persons: “A person on the wheelchair will be able to come to the stadium, buy a ticket, and visit the grandstands or the zone near the football field: the project provides for all relevant solutions.”

Currently the in-situ concreting is being performed, and the contractors have begun the assembly and installation of three-edged columns. “A total amount of 88 three-edged columns is to be installed to form the perimeter of primary building of the stadium. These columns constitute one of the main bearing structures of the stadium. Currently, we also continue works associated with the installation of temporary supporting structures and lay slabs under the crane featuring a capacity of 750 tonnes. The crane is being prepared for mobilisation to our region, to our site. It will take ten days to deploy the crane at the site,” reported Sergey Pichushkin.

Nizhny Novgorod will host 6 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russiatm, including quarter-final. According to the independent survey held in December 2014 – January 2015 at the request of FIFA, 83% of Nizhny Novgorod residents support the tournament in Nizhny Novgorod, which is the highest indicator among the 11 host cities as of the survey.
