Volgograd Arena — Sector A Tribunes Complete, Facade Mounting Commenced

PJSC Stroytransgaz (STG Group) being the general contractor for the construction of the Volgograd Arena Stadium for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ has completed the construction of Sector A tribunes and commenced the installation of facade elements.

Up to now, the works on installation of 20 rows of seats at the lower tier and 44 rows at the upper tier of Sector A have been completed. The second tier of tribunes at other Sectors — В, С and D — is still under construction. The tribunes are 70% completed; on the whole, the monolithic works at the stadium are 95% completed.

Installation of the main metal structures is still in progress. The top assembly of facade elements has been commenced: the first section of the 60 tonne crown has been assembled. In total, the facade will include 44 sections a half of which will be assembled and mounted onto the stadium as finished structures, while the remaining ones will be assembled at a height and attached to the already mounted elements. The facade sections will be mounted onto pyramid columns. For the period of mounting works they will be supported by temporary structures to fix the elements in-situ until the assembly is complete.

Also, the installation of 44 metal columns to support the compression ring — a metal structure intended for fixing the cable-stayed roof at an over 40 m height — is near completion. For these purposes a portable Liebherr LR 1750 crawler crane (750 tonnes) has arrived to the Volgograd Arena. Such big cranes are only used at the major construction sites. The crawler crane has been placed at a special platform inside the stadium bowl to allow the commencement of the mounting of the compression ring alongside the mounting of the facade where smaller cranes placed along the exterior perimeter of the bowl will be involved. Moving along the “field” Liebherr LR-1750 will firstly mount 44 eighteen metres long beams of 30 tonnes each. The beams will amalgamate supporting columns and form a ring to support the future cable-stayed roof system.

The works on the installation of on-site utilities — wastewater discharge system and automatic fire suppression line — at the Volgograd Arena are in progress. The installation of the external ground loop has been started.
