Stroytransgaz-M (STG Group) has completed the construction of the sports complex for SKA Ice Hockey Club in Saint Petersburg. The facility totalling about 38,600 m² in area was built in Latyshskikh Strelkov Street, Nevskiy District, Saint Petersburg. The previous day the State Construction Control Office issued an authorization declaring the compliance of the venue built with the requirements set forth in Russian laws.

Alevtina Bormotova, Head of Construction Project Implementation Office, said that the sports center was built with the use of advanced technologies and materials in short time, the construction took less than two years to complete.

Last Saturday, August 20, Gennady Timchenko, owner of Volga Group, KHL Board Chairman and SKA President, announced in Saint-Petersburg that the construction of the Hockey City venue had been completed. The same day the SKA Walk of Fame composed of 46 maples and larches was inaugurated at the venue site - this event was linked to the 70th anniversary of SKA Ice Hockey Club.

Gennady Timchenko said that the venue had been designed with the use of the best practices employed in Canada. “What is the ‘base’? First of all, it is two rinks. One of them can hold around a thousand spectators. The venue will include a medical facility, a gym, a football pitch. There is also a hotel and a spacious parking lot. In a word, everything that is needed for team coaching. I think the SKA base will become a gravity point for all hockey fans. It is convenient that the building is located near the Ice [Palace],” said Mr. Timchenko to the media. He also noted that this base may become a training center for the Russian hockey select team.

August 20 the new sports club was visited by George Poltavchenko, Saint-Petersburg Governor, Alexander Dyukov, Gazprom neft President, Michael Karisalov, STGM Chairman, Aleksey Kaz’min, STGM CEO, Dmitry Konov, SIBUR Managing Director, Roman Rotenberg, SKA Vice-President, as well as management, coaches and SKA hockey players, and club veterans and SKA Academy trainees.

Roman Rotenberg, SKA Vice-President, also pointed to the importance of the new club for the evolution of Russian hockey. He said, “It is our wish that as many children in Saint-Petersburg as possible go in for hockey. It is great numbers that can pay back in future, bring new wins. Having own trainees is key for SKA, and the base is what we are starting with. I’m hoping that in the near future we will be able to build some other sports venues, and expecting the city to give us a helping hand with this.”
