On August 24, a visiting meeting was held by Valery Shantsev, the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, at the construction site of the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. At this stage, the builders continue installation of major structures the stadium roof frame will be assembled of. The weight of the frame will be over 10 thousand tons, which is almost 1.5 times heavier than the Eiffel Tower.

“The main concrete works has been completed. The stadium looks like we can just mount seats and watch football right away. Before the end of 2016 we plan to build the stadium roof frame, and next year we will install a translucent polycarbonate roof,” said the Governor.

“Today we have had a conversation with foreign experts who visited the stadium. According to them, the work done is of the highest quality. It is very important as the stadium will become a great piece of heritage of 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia”, said Valery Shantsev.

According to the Head of Construction of the Stadium Sergei Pichushkin, PJSC Stroytransgaz, at this date the installation of two of the sixteen unitized blocks of the stadium roof steelwork has been completed: “We will install 14 more similar blocks, each weighing approximately 220 tons, before the end of the year. The blocks will be aggregated by connecting elements to form a so called “compression ring” which is to be rested on 132 reinforced concrete columns above the grandstands. On the average, it takes 10 to 12 days to assemble one unitized block of the roof steelwork.”

“In addition, currently we are completing the works on the stadium monolithic structures – 85% of the works are completed. We have fully completed construction of the upper tier grandstands in sector B. In general, the readiness of the upper tier treads in all sectors of the stadium is 65%,” said Pichushkin.

Nizhny Novgorod will host 6 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia™, including the quarter-final.
