Stroytransgaz has started to install the compression ring at the Volgograd Arena Stadium. This is the primary bearing steel structure that will hold in tension the cable-stayed roofing system at a height of 40 meters.

The Volgograd stadium is unique in that it uses cable-stayed structures (cable stays, ropes) as bearing members for the roofing. It has an appearance of a bicycle wheel - the cable stays stretch out from the center of the roof and are attached to a so-called compression ring, which encircles the stadium at a height of 40 meters. The ring is composed of 44 equal parts, each weighing about 30 tonnes. All the 44 elements with a total weight of 1,370 tonnes rest on support columns and create a sturdy ring, which can carry the significant load transmitted through the rope system of the roofing.

The cable-stayed system for the Volgograd Arena is being manufactured in Switzerland, the remaining structural steel for the stadium (compression ring, facade etc.) is home made. The total length of the steel ropes with diameters ranging between 60 and 110mm, which will run radially and annularly, will be up to 7 km. Once the installation of the compression ring and cable-stayed system is complete in 2017, the builders will proceed to mount horizontal covers of the roofing (membrane covers and polycarbonate).

At the same time, finishing of internal rooms continues at the stadium. A new phase has begun - construction of the reinforced floor on the stadium’s ground level. On a sand bedding 50 to 200cm thick a concrete slab is being created which will support the finished floor. On the other levels of the venue the floors are already prepared for finishing work, which will start next spring, as planned.

Assembly of the primary structural steel continues - assembly and erection of facade elements are over 15% complete.
