20% of roof framework assembled at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium Approx. 2,200 tons of structural steel has been installed using a huge 750t crane. This was announced at the end of the visiting meeting at the stadium which was carried out under the supervision of the Governor Valery Shantsev.

«Our current task is to build the roof framework, and to mount the roof on it in 2017. Concreting operations that previously were our main focus are already a completed stage. To date, the upper tier grandstands have been completed, all arena floors have been built in all the sectors. Just imagine, almost fifteen thousand KAMAZ trucks - that much concrete was needed to erect the building of the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, this is about 150,000 cubic meters of concrete. By the way, the bulk of the building materials for the main arena is supplied by local companies,» said Valery Shantsev.

According to Sergey Pichushkin, Stroytransgaz’ Nizhny Novgorod Stadium Project Director, the roof structural steel will be comprised of 16 preassembled blocks (each such block weighs about 220 tons) joined together to form the so-called «compression ring» above the grandstands. To date, five blocks have been installed into the final position and are supported at a height over 40 meters by temporary structures. At the same time, 44 cantilever trusses are being assembled and erected, these are the elements that will join the «compression ring» with the supporting columns which will bear the main weight of the roof structural steel.

«After all of the 16 blocks are installed into the design position and connected with 44 cantilever trusses to the supporting columns, the temporary structures will be disassembled, and erection of the framework of the roof above the grandstands will have been completed,» said Sergey Pichushkin.

It should be noted that simultaneously interior finishing operations and construction of 18 access control points for stadium visitors are still underway. On-site and off-site utilities (water supply, sewage, power supply, lighting, heating, ventilation, telecom systems) are being installed. Installation of main heating lines has commenced.

As Deputy Governor Dmitry Svatkovsky noted, the stadium is the key, but not the only one, sport venue which will be built in the region for the Cup: «Also, training grounds and sports facilities will be constructed. These venues will allow us to foster football and other sports, and will attract parents who will enroll their children at sports schools. The main thing is that the infrastructure work once the World Cup is over. We are building not only for football pros, the new venues will become home for hundreds of kids who go in for sports.»

Nizhny Novgorod will host 6 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia™, including the quarter-final.
