Assembling of the unique cable-stayed structure is in progress at the Volgograd Arena Stadium. Over 12 km of steel cables are arranged on the temporary structures and prepared for lifting above the stands. The 2,300-ton cable-stayed roof will become the largest in Russia.

“The cable-stayed roofing system of the Volgograd Arena is unique, among other things, because construction works of such scale are for the first time performed in Russia”, noted the Head of the Stadium Construction Sergey Kamin. “The way I see it, a less complex structure has been used in Krasnodar, but then their stadium is of lower seating capacity, that is for 33 thousand spectators”.

Currently they arrange the cables on already assembled temporary structures. “The cables are arranged by exact geodetic marks. As we don’t want any mistakes made during assembling such a sophisticated system, we have invited the leading specialists of the Swiss company which supplies the cable-stayed system. That is why all works, from installation of temporary steel structures, laying out of cable system and deviators, clamps, jacks and so on, are performed under control or designer supervision of the Swiss engineers. Besides, we have engaged a number of specialists from the Maximus company, which designed the system”, said the Head of the Stadium Construction.

At the same time they finalize actually invisible, but very important and complex construction stage, namely, dismantling of temporary structures supporting the stadium facade in the final position. “The unique facade system of our stadium resembles a “crown” and weighs 3.800 tons”, told Sergey Kamin. “Soon we will strip this “crown” of temporary structures, and shift the total weight upon 44 support columns. While not clearly visible if viewed from outside, it is actually a huge volume of works, as we verify each element, and starting from mid-February we have been re-tightening all joints and adjusted the facade geometry in accordance with design documentation requirements”.

In the short run the builders will start lifting 88 steel trusses to form the covering over the stadium lobby. The trusses are assembled on the ground cutting both the total setup time and volume of works at height.

Finishing works, installation of utility networks, construction of the roundabout pedestrian overpass and 123 m long central stairway are in progress at the construction site.
