Volgograd Arena is acclaimed as the most eco-friendly stadium

Following the results of environmental certification, Volgograd Arena stadium has become the leader among arenas built for World Cup 2018. The day before special green certificates were awarded to Andrey Milovanov, Head of Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Sport-In”.

Certification was carried out after green standard “RUSO. THE FOOTBALL STADIUMS”, developed by experts of “National Center for Green Construction” Association and international specialists supported by Russia 2018 Local Organising Committee. The standard was created specifically for certification of football stadiums for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ and its base documents were officially approved by FIFA.

The main requirements for football green standard include the following: environmental protection and safety; energy preservation and efficiency; sustainable use of water resources; environmentally-friendly properties of materials and waste management; quality of architectural solutions and land planning, as well as stadium amenities for the visitors.

Following the inspection that started long before World Cup and reached its peak within the first months of 2018, each stadium was assigned a certain amount of points for every index out of dozens. As a result the stadium in Volgograd has become the leader gaining 404 points. Rostov Arena received 391 points, Ekaterinburg Arena – 390 points, the stadium in Kaliningrad – 372 points, Samara Arena – 362 points, the stadium in Nizhny Novgorod – 361 points, and Mordovia Arena – 354 points. This allowed to issue a “Silver” certificate for each stadium.

A number of resource efficient and eco-friendly solutions were implemented at Volgograd Arena. For instance, stadium utilities management through building management system allows to save 20 to 70 % of energy resources during facility operation, and used HF-cables do not generate halogen that destroys atmosphere during combustion. Mainly LED lamps are used for stadium illumination. The lamps are mercury free and consume 10 times less energy than incandescent light bulbs. Environmentally-friendly materials used for construction of the stadium comply with BREEAM international standards and have the required certificates of quality.

As part of environmental certification of the stadium on STG part, major efforts were invested by experts of Building Inspection and HSE Department led by Andrey Litovchenko. The matter was supervised by Tatyana Shaforostova directly at Volgograd Arena.
