STG Reconstructs Airport in the Solovetsky Islands

Stroytransgaz JSC has signed contract for reconstruction of the airport in the Solovetsky Islands The customer is the State Public Institution in Arkhangelsk region “Main Department for Capital Construction”.  The project is worth of 2.6bn roubles.

The airport complex, built over 70 years ago, is in Big Solovetsky Island, 165 km to the south of the polar circle line. Solovetsky State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve is located nearby. The passenger terminal of the airport is a three-storey wooden building and has only one flight strip 1,500 m long. Due to long operation the existing pavement of the flight strip is in a critical condition and its further operation threatens safety of air passengers.

During reconstruction STG will construct a check point, facilities for metrological and ornithological support of flights, warehouse for machinery and equipment, power supply facilities, waste treatment facilities.

The project stipulates reconstruction works on the flight strip with pavement replacement, construction of a new taxiway strip and an airport apron for parking of four airplanes with a site for anti-ice treatment.

At present the airport belongs to class D (Г) and can receive airplanes with the maximum takeoff weight of 30 tons such as An-2, An-24, An-28, L-410 and helicopters of all types. The reconstruction will enable significant improvement of flight strip parameters so that the airport could receive modern heavier air planes like Bombardier Q400 and double the throughput capacity of the airport. At present it can provide services to 50 passengers per hour.

The project of airport reconstruction is implemented in the framework of the state program for Solovetsky Islands infrastructure development. Completion date is November 2020.
