STG continues construction of transport interchange in Khimki

Construction of transport interchange on Repin street

STG continues the construction of Phase 1 of the transport interchange at the intersection of the M-10 "Russia" motorway and Repin Street in the city of Khimki, Moscow Region, on the instructions of President Vladimir Putin. Despite forced downtime due to the epidemiological situation in the world, the scheduled completion of the construction is anticipated in Quarter 4 2021, and by the end of 2020 the main road of the interchange with temporary exits is planned to be opened for traffic, which will allow residents of Khimki to use the overpass over the Leningradskoye highway.

The interchange under construction will link the Old and New Khimki and will produce a “good traffic effect” for the city, unclogging the existing interlink between: Yubileyny Avenue and Mashkinskoye highway. Currently, the Old and New Khimki are separated by Leningradskoye Highway and the railway. The only traffic artery, connecting these residential areas, suffers from congestions during peak hours. The only way to get to the old part of the town from the new one is via Yubileyny avenue.

In December 2019, Stroytransgaz JSC, as a prime contractor, entered into a contract with the State public institution of the Moscow region “ Roadbuilding Directorate” for the construction of Phase 1 of the transport interchange. The chief designer of the project is “Giprostroymost Institute” OJSC. The design documentation is 100% ready and a positive findings of Glavgosexpertiza of Russia has been received. The detailed design documentation is 90% complete.

As part of Phase 1 implementation, Stroytransgaz will build a four-lane overpass across M-10 “Russia” motorway, a transport  interchange at various levels with preservation of existing exits to M-10 “Russia” motorway from Repina street and on the same level with the traffic light regulation at the intersection of 9 May and Druzhba streets and will reconstruct Repin street and parts of 9 May and Druzhba streets. At the transport interchange, it is planned to build sidewalks, install outdoor lighting, traffic lights, CCTVs and noise screens. Also within phase 1, STG will arrange architectural lighting on the overpass, storm sewer, a drain line and a local treatment plant   within the boundaries of the work area.

Capital support construction and slipway assembly

The length of the interchange within Phase 1 will be about 838 m, of which 158,3 м is the overpass length. The number of lanes on the main road and exits is from 2 to 5, with design speed of about 70 km / h.

Upon construction of the interchange, traffic will be possible in all directions, which will allow to unclog the junction at the intersection of Leningradskoye Highway and Yubileyny avenue. It will also ensure vehicle access to the industrial part of the town, which will result in a possible increase in the number of jobs up to 28 thousand, as well as in the population growth of Khimki. The inconvenience to residents during construction of the interchange is minimized by introduction of a temporary traffic pattern.

Installation of reinforced concrete beams of the span

For more effective implementation of the construction project, subcontracting companies were engaged: Bridges and Tunnels Construction company LLC  (overpass),  Finprom Engineering LLC (reconstruction of power lines). Every day, about 110 people come to the construction site in Khimki, including: 75 workers, 15 machine operators, 2 surveyors, 5 line engineering technicians and 10 people of  administrative staff. In addition, the facilities engage 15 construction equipment units.

At the moment, workers started the assembly of prefabricated reinforced concrete beams of the span, removal of the existing utility lines as well as  concrete casting for five supports. They completely installed the beams (13 of 13 pcs.) of the span in the axes of the supports 4-5. Support No. 1 is installed without a backwall and wing walls (separate the end of the span from the embankment), support No. 2 is installed for the arch span, and a  slipway is being assembled for the pre-assembly of the arch span of the future overpass.

Construction of capital supports of the bridge

On June 1 the workers started the installation of steel structures on the slipway for subsequent assembly. The assembled arch on the slipway will be moved to the design position above the Leningradskoye highway using the launching method, which will allow not to tie up the traffic on the highway.

By the end of the year, a 158 m-long overpass and approaches thereto will be ready, Repin and May 9 Streets will be reconstructed. It is also planned to open the overpass for traffic thereby uniting Old and New Khimki.
