Renovated paved runway

In May 2019, STG JSC started the renovation works for the airport system on the Solovetsky Islands. Nowadays, within the first phase of the third stage, STG has completed the renovation of the remaining paved runway section in advance. Within the second phase, STG will install navigation lighting and weather equipment, build patrol road and perform landscaping of the airport system.

The customer is the State Public Institution of the Arkhangelsk region “The Main Directorate for Capital Construction ”. The project is being implemented within the scope of the government program “The Solovetsky Archipelago infrastructure development (2014–2021)."

The airport system, built more than 70 years ago, is in Big Solovetsky Island, 165 km to the south of the polar circle line. It is located near the Solovetsky State Historical, Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve. Prior to the commencement by STG of the renovation project, the airport passenger terminal represented a three-storey wooden building and had only one runway 1,500 m long. As a result of extended operation, the existing runway pavement has been in a critical condition and its further operation posed risks to the safety of air passengers.

The airport admits aircrafts on newly-built apron

The renovation of the airport has enabled to significantly improve the paved runway performance so that the airport could handle modern heavier aircrafts, ensure the required level of passenger safety and double its throughput capacity.

The 1st and 2nd stages of the project were completed by STG on November 29, 2019. The paved runway was renovated and re-paved with 961.6 m out of 1,500 m commissioned. The commissioned new runway will give impetus to a dynamic growth of air links not only between the archipelago and Arkhangelsk, but also with other parts of the country.

On August 13, 2020, STG JSC obtained a conclusion from Rostekhnadzor on the compliance of the renovated capital construction facility with the requirements of design documentation, including the requirements for energy efficiency and requirements for equipping the capital construction facility with devices for measuring energy resources used. On the 14th of August, the renovated paved runway 1500 m long was commissioned in advance.

At present, work is in progress to build patrol road, airport fencing, foundation for navigation lighting facilities and to perform landscaping of the airport system. The works for the weather equipment and bioacoustic system foundation were completed.

121 specialist are employed and 39 machine units are used on-site.

Project completion is scheduled for Q4 2020.
