Stroytransgaz JSC Signs a New Contract in Magadan Region

Stroytransgaz JSC has signed a new contract for the reconstruction of Gerba-Omsukchan road in the Magadan Region. The section is 15 km long and connects two administrative districts: Khasyn and Omsukchan. Magadan Regional Public Institution Administration for the Operation and Construction of Road Transport Infrastructure is the owner of the project. The contract price is about RUB 2 billion. It is planned to complete the works by the end of 2027.

The project is designed to restore traffic operation accessibility of the road, eliminate defects, structural failures and their causes in the section.

The existing road section from km 241 to km 256 does not meet category IV requirements. The works will include the change of the gravel road carpet to asphalt concrete, reconstruction of eight culverts and construction of three new bridges across the Golubaya River, the Khivegchan River and the Chapchik River.

After the reconstruction, the road will have two lanes, one in each direction. The roadway is 10 m wide, including the roadside. The design speed in the section is 80 km/h. To ensure the uninterrupted transit traffic, only one lane of the road will be repaired. In places where pipes and bridges are installed, temporary bypass roads will be provided and a temporary bridge will also be built in one section.

The road carpet repairs will start with the construction of the capping layer consisting of natural gravel and sand mixture. Next, the road bed will be made from soil treated with cement and emulsified bitumen. After that, the lower and upper layers of the asphalt concrete pavement will be laid.

Cold recycling will be used to make the pavement. It is cost-effective and environmentally friendly. A special recycling machine crushes and recycles the old asphalt concrete pavement. After that, organic binders are added to the resulting mixture and laid as a new asphalt concrete pavement. Recycling significantly reduces the probability of damage to the base soil during road carpet reconstruction. Cold recycling is usually performed in one pass using a pneumatic tire recycler that exerts low pressure on the soil with minor deformations. The high performance recycler allows to work 3-5 times faster than conventional soil stabilization methods.

The existing bridges across the Golubaya River, the Khivegchan River and the Chapchik River are to be demolished and new ones will be built in their place. The longest reinforced concrete six-span girder bridge across the Chapchik River is 113.3 m long. The total length of engineering structures is 249.8 m.

All existing culverts will be dismantled in the excess right-of-way of the designed road section. It is planned to install seven new pipes with a diameter of 1.5 m and total length of 141.9 m and a 2 × 1.5 m and 19.5 m long twin pipe. Culverts are provided not only as overflow pipes, but also as water drainage from the roadbed during the transitional season.

Road signs with a high-intensity reflective film will be installed on the road. It will allow to detect and recognize the sign from a greater distance thus improving traffic safety and has a positive effect on the driver's visual load at night.

A metal barrier fence will be installed on culvert sections, on sections along blankets with a height of 3 m or more and on road approaches to bridges. In addition, the road will be marked and reflective posts will be installed upon completion of the pavement.

The existing Gerba-Omsukchan road is a regional road. The total length of the motorway is 251 km. The road connects two administrative districts: Khasyn and Omsukchan. It starts on km 311 of P-504 Kolyma motorway and ends in Omsukchan village. The site is located 576 km north-east of Magadan.
