Final Stage Reconstruction of Embankment in Volgograd

A large-scale project for renovation of the lower terrace of the city embankment has reached the final stage. The terrace is 3.5 km long. The construction activities are carried out by Stroytransgaz Group on behalf of the Volgograd Administration. It is planned to complete all works during the first six months of 2022.

The most notable facility of the renovated embankment is a 2,300 seat amphitheatre under construction accessed by a pedestrian bridge over the lateral road. To date, the amphitheatre in-situ concreting and the reinforcement of the last section of the top slab are nearing completion. The construction of granite steps is underway. The amphitheatre facade is also being glazed, 30 out of 38 window units and a ventilated facade have already been installed, 815 m2 out of 1,980 m2 have been completed. Internal finishing works continue, including walls and ceilings insulation, plastering, wall filling, installation of utilities (water supply, sewerage and power supply networks).

The construction of the bridge over the lateral road has been completed. 1,130 m2 of waterproofing and 187 running meters of hand rails were installed. The steel structures of the bridge are now being painted. Today, 2,300 m2 out of 3,000 m2 have been completed. The remaining works include granite stone paving and installation of trench drains.

Berth foundation reinforcement and scaffold restoration works are underway. Coastal protection and restoration of quay walls is also in full swing. These works are performed using the barge.

A 16.5 hectares park area will be located along the embankment. To date, the landscaping is 95% complete, 9,520 shrubs and trees out of 11,550 have been planted, 1,430 m2 of lawns out of 16,412 m2 have been sown. The main component of the park area will be a walking alley, where paving stones are now being installed. It is 88% complete. Most asphalt concrete pavement on the embankment has been completed, only 1,500 m2 are left.

In addition, the project provides for recreation areas. The cycling path is 93% complete, the skateboarding area is 40% complete. The lower terrace will have new lighting, the installation of CCTVs and sound warning system is expected. The parking lot for more than 300 vehicles has been completed.

62nd Army Central Embankment is a key landmark of Volgograd and a favourite leisure area. It has never been overhauled since its construction in 1952 and most of its components are worn out.

The landscaped lower terrace of the 62nd Army Embankment will become part of a single recreation area along the Volga bank from the Mamayev Kurgan to the Floodplain of the Tsaritsa River. It already includes the area near Volgograd Arena stadium, Victory Park, the renovated upper terrace of the city embankment and a park near the Russia. My History museum, a garden square near the Gasitel fire boat, Pushkin garden square and Pakhmutova garden square.
