Stroytransgaz completed coast protection activities in Nagayev Bay in Magadan ahead of schedule

Stroytransgaz completed coast protection activities in Nagayev Bay (the Sea of Okhotsk) and Portovoye Highway (the city of Magadan) ahead of schedule. The coast protection works covered 365.96 m, while the lengths of the retaining wall and Portovoye Highway section under reconstruction are 192.97 m and 242 m respectively.

Portovoye Highway in Magadan is of great importance for the region and is called the “lifeline”. This road is a key element in the arrangement of Severny Zavoz (deliveries of goods to the Northern Territories of Russia) for the Magadan Region, delivery of black coal for heating the administrative centre of the region, as well as fuel, food and industrial products for Kolyma in general. But sea waves, rockslides, and landslides caused coastline melting of two metres per year. Prior to the reconstruction, the distance from the roadway to the water’s edge in some areas was no more than 10 cm.

Project execution made it possible to prevent further coast and car road eroding. Our team of experts completed coast protection activities in Nagayev Bay: shoreline reinforcement with tubular sheet piles, levelling the existing slope to a stable condition, and reconstruction of the retaining wall along Portovoye Highway.

The damaged section of Portovoye Highway, the only road connecting Magadan and the Magadan Commercial Seaport, has been completely rebuilt and renovated. The Portovoye Highway section was reinforced by means of extra strong reinforced-concrete slabs; an equivalent of such slabs is used for airfield roadbeds. In contrast to the crushed stone more frequently used in Kolyma, the reinforced-concrete base can withstand the heaviest loads. Asphalted heavy slabs were also utilized for the pedestrian footpath. The width of the pedestrian area is 1.5 m. Guardrails have been installed on both the seaside and the roadside. Besides that, a viewing platform has been arranged overlooking the Nagayev Bay and the coastline of Mayak park. In September 2021, two-way motor traffic was officially opened along the reinforced section of Port Highway.

Stroytransgaz will further improve the reinforced area. The contract for this work was awarded in August 2021. The total area of the work will be 2,936 m2. As of today, design and estimate documentation has been developed, and a positive conclusion of the State Expertise was received on November 23, 2021. The contract calls for the work to be fully completed in 2025.
