Enabling Works Started for the Second Construction Phase of the Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex

The Bagaevsky Project is proceeding to the second construction phase in Rostov Region. FKU ROSTRANSMODERNIZATSIYA and Stroytransgaz Group signed a ₽27.9b contract.

Today, Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex near Arpachin settlement is one of the largest transport infrastructure facilities under construction in the Rostov Region. The project aims to address the problem of the Don shallowing; when the project is completed, the throughput of inland waterways will increase by 19 million tons.

"We understand that this solves global problems. These are shipping issues in view of lower water level. The second problem is also important. This is the issue of potable water for people living in the Don region. That's why we are starting the second construction phase. A tender has already been held and contracts have been signed," said Vladimir Okunev, Deputy Governor of Rostov Region and Minister of Transport.

Today, the construction site is being cleared and preparations are made for the construction of temporary access roads. The detailed design documentation development and construction of a rotational camp and a power transmission line will have commenced by the end of this year.

The main function of Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex is to ensure the required course dimensions (4m deep, 80m wide and 500m radius of curvature) at the problematic section and lock chamber sills of Kochetovsky Hydroelectric Complex.

Structures to be built at the hydroelectric complex site include a navigable lock chamber, upstream and downstream access ducts with berthing and guiding structures, a spillway dam, a fish-pass lock chamber, an earth dam, a fish pass and spawning channel, an operator settlement, an access road, production, service, maintenance and auxiliary facilities, a water intake, a pumping station and central control building.

Dams for engineered land protection, sections of the bank protection and bed straightening and the Aksai Spillway and Controlling Facility will be built at Bagaevskoye Reservoir. In addition, the reservoir area and downstream section will be dredged.

Note that in 2020, Stroytransgaz completed the construction of facilities under Phase 1 (pre-construction) of Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex. As part of the project, a navigable bypass channel to transfer the navigable pass for the period of work (dredging of the bypass channel to a depth of 4m, the total cut amount was around 1.7 million cubic meters) and the power transmission line for power supply of the construction camp were built. Workers also erected the berth of the construction base and created hydraulic fill areas for office buildings and structures of the future hydroelectric complex. To fulfil these tasks, builders used the material removed during dredging operations.

The 2nd phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
