Pedestrian overpasses in construction on Lobnya–Sheremetyevo Airport highway

Lobnya–Sheremetyevo Airport highway is very important for the Moscow region. Located in the immediate vicinity of the airport, this road is heavily used by local residents and visitors coming to the region. Four pedestrian overpasses will be built within the reconstruction length to provide safe routes for pedestrians. These will include pram/wheelchair ramps, and elevators for the disabled.

At this point, 2 pedestrian overpasses are being built: No.4 near Terminal B of the Sheremetyevo Airport and No.3 near Nosovo village.

At pedestrian overpass 4, the pile foundation of 28 piles has been installed, and the concrete towers of pedestrian overpass are being built, including elevator shafts and stair approaches, progress is 188.3 cu.m out of 451.5 cu.m. Construction completion is 41%. The steel superstructure will be installed after concreting of overpass towers is complete.

The steel superstructure is now being shop-fabricated, once fabricated, it will be delivered to the job site as assembly components. It will then be assembled on the slipway and installed onto the supports of pedestrian overpass using a Liebherr LTM 1400 crane.

At pedestrian overpass 3, the pile foundation comprising 54 piles has been installed, and the concrete towers of pedestrian overpass are being built, including elevator shafts and stair approaches, progress is 361 cu.m out of 485 cu.m. Construction completion is 75%. The steel superstructure will be installed after concreting of overpass towers is complete.

Construction of pedestrian overpasses 1 and 2 will commence once the services (gas line and power lines) are relocated from the job sites.

The pedestrian overpasses within the reconstruction length are being built according to a typical design. Everything starts with the installation of the pile foundation, followed by the construction of the towers of pedestrian overpasses with elevator shafts, and stair approaches (ramps). Then, builders proceeds to install the steel superstructure and walking deck on it. At the final work stage, openings in the towers are filled up, the stairs are covered with polycarbonate, and equipment is installed such as elevators, heating, ventilation and lighting systems.

In addition to building the pedestrian overpasses, work is continuing on utilities at the site: the progress is 45% for stormwater sewers, 80% for communication lines, 52% for 0.4-10kV cable lines.

The environmental provisions of the project will be fulfilled by building 3 local treatment plants (LTP): LTP 2 is completely constructed. LTP 1 is currently at the final stage of installation, with the wastewater inlet piping and treated water discharge piping being assembled, and LTP being hooked up to power supply. LTP 3 status: tanks of the wastewater pumping station have been installed, backfilling is in progress.

Road reconstruction is also underway: excavated 18,496.44 out of 67,979.00 cu.m of soil, placed 5,979.52 out of 33,032.00 cu.m of fill material in the road bed, 18,312.6 out of 79,759.00 sq.m of crushed stone in subbase, and installed 5,298.2 out of 73,219.00 sq.m of asphalt pavement. Overall construction progress of the road restoration project is 20%.

About 175 personnel and 35 units of machinery are engaged at the construction site on a daily basis.

Background info:

The Lobnya–Sheremetyevo Airport highway section reconstruction project is being implemented as part of an action plan aimed at developing the road network and improving transport accessibility between the transport districts of Lobnya and neighbouring districts in the view of a significant growth in urban development across the residential and industrial areas. The project is commissioned by the Road Construction Office of the Moscow Region.

As a result of this project, the number of lanes will increase from 3 to 7. The reconstructed section will be 2.2 km along the main route of the Lobnenskoye Highway, 3.7 km along side roads and exit roads, and 0.9 km along Sheremetyevskaya Street.

Upon completion of the reconstruction project, the average speed of traffic will be about 80 km/h on the main road and 50 km/h on side roads, vehicle travel time will reduce to 10-15 minutes, and the traffic capacity of the route will amount to 67,000 vehicles per day. The project is scheduled for completion in 2022.
