In January 2013, STG signed a contract with FGC UES JSC for the construction and reconstruction of power distribution facilities of power generating unit 3 of Rostov nuclear power plant.

Implementation of the project  significantly improved the reliability of power supply in the Rostov Region and the Krasnodar Territory.

The STG scope of works included construction of a new 500 kV high-voltage power line from the Rostov NPP to Tikhoretskaya №2 substation over a distance of about 360 km. The power line runs parallel to the existing 500 kV HV power line from the Rostov NPP to Tikhoretskaya №1, across the Rostov Region and the Krasnodar Territory. In the course of construction, two dedicated crossings were constructed – across the Cheprak basin and the Vesyolovskoye water reservoir.

The STG scope also included reconstruction of existing power line sections with a total length of about 138 km:

  • 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Nevinnomysk,
  • 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Tikhoretsk 1,
  • 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Yuzhnaya,
  • 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Budyonnovsk,
  • 500 kV HV power line from Kubanskaya to Tikhoretsk.

As part of the project, the following substations were modified:

  • Tikhoretskaya 500 kV substation,
  • Shakhty 500 kV substation,
  • Budyonnovsk 500 kV substation,
  • Yuzhnaya 500 kV substation.

The project was implemented in several stages.

At first, STG reconstructed the 500 kV HV lines from Rostov NPP to Yuzhnaya, from Rostov NPP to Budyonnovsk, and from Rostov NPP to Nevinnomysk, constructed part of the 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Tikhoretskaya №2, and modified the substations.

At the Budyonnovsk and Yuzhnaya substations, STG modified the 500 kV outdoor switchgear, replacing the power equipment in linear cells and the protective relaying and emergency response automation equipment.

At the 500 kV Shakhty substation, the 500 kV HV power line from Rostov NPP to Shakhty was reassigned to a different cell.

After that, construction and modification of the remaining sections of the power lines was completed, and the Tikhoretskaya 500 kV substation was modified.

The Tikhoretskaya expansion included construction of a new 500 kV linear cell, installation and installation of a 500 kV shunt reactor, and rerouting the 500 kV HV power line to the substation’s 500 kV outdoor switchgear.

The project was completed in January 2015.
