First Element of Roof Steelwork Erected at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

PJSC Stroytransgaz (STG Group) has now finalised the installation of the first consolidated block of roof steelwork at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. Another 16 similar blocks weighing around 220 tonnes each will be mounted by the end of 2016 at the latest. The blocks will be connected using connecting elements to form a so called ‘compression ring’ which is to be rested above the grandstands on 132 RC columns. In all, over 10 thousand tonnes of main steelwork are required to construct the roof.

Sergey Pichushkin, Stroytransgaz’ Project Manager, shares details on the installation of the block: “It takes on average 10 to 12 days to assemble one consolidated block of roof steelwork. In parallel to this, we have been pre-commissioning and testing the equipment required for the installation of the block for 4 days. Further, a 750-tonne capacity crane was used to erect the block into the design position. Currently, another 3 blocks are being assembled on appropriate racks in the centre of the field and, once assembled, will be erected to the required height and attached to each other.

Builders are close to finishing the construction of cast-in-situ structures of the Stadium’s main building which has 5 floors at Sector A and 3 floors at the remaining ones. The construction of 2nd level grandstands, pedestrial overpass, three-edged columns and entrance lobbies is underway. On-site and off-site utilities (water supply, sewage, power supply, lighting, heating, ventilation, telecom systems, etc.) continue to be constructed.

Over 1,300 workers are involved in the construction. The works are being carried out 24 hours a day.
