Reinforced bed for Fish Bypass and Spawning Channel

Reinforced bed for Fish Bypass and Spawning Channel

Head control gate of the BHEC fish bypass and spawning channel

In the Rostov Region, Stroytransgaz Group carries out construction of the Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex, an important transport facility for the entire country. The hydroelectric complex will not only provide the required dimensions of the waterway, but will also help to increase the population of Don fishes due to the fish bypass and spawning canal (FBSC) under construction.

The current works at the BHEC construction site include reinforcement of the FBSC head control gate. In the future, it will function to maintain the optimal water flow in the fish bypass and spawning channel. The head control gate is a hydraulic structure consisting of an inlet section, a flood bed part (an artificial bed for water stream flow) and an outlet section.

The inlet section serves to connect the flood bed to the river, and the outlet section – to the fish bypass and spawning channel. The flood bed itself is required to control the water flow through the control gate and is designed to protect the channel bed against being washed away by the river flow. The flood bed consists of five sections 26 meters long and 12 meters wide. Each section includes reinforced concrete base plates, which are currently being reinforced at the site.

Reinforcement of the head control gate of the BHEC fish bypass and spawning channel

There are several reinforcement methods in construction. In BHEC construction, so called “rod reinforcement” is used. This method provides for a system of rods (frame) to be included in the volume of concrete, which distributes the load within the structure. The combination of reinforcing bars and concrete gives a combination of their properties. The result is reinforced concrete that is resistant to significant loads.

Project background:

The Bagayevsky Hydroelectric Complex is the most important infrastructure project not only for the Rostov region, but also for the entire country. The hydroelectric complex under construction will be composed of a shipping lock with a central control room, upper and lower approach channels with mooring-guiding structures, a spillway and earth fill dam, a meandering fish bypass and spawning channel and a fish passage lock, industrial, service, engineering and auxiliary facilities, and housing for operating personnel.
