Volgograd Embankment Improvement Progress

Construction works continue on the lower terrace of the City of Volgograd embankment. The terrace is 3.5 kilometres long. The construction activities are carried out by Stroytransgaz Group on behalf of the City of Volgograd Administration. All works are scheduled to be completed during the first six months of 2022.

At Berth No. 15, which is being improved, concreting of floor slab has been completed using the continuous pouring technology. The works took 10 hours, and the total volume of concrete poured amounted to 188 cubic meters. The area of the Berth is still being improved, which includes stripping of existing asphalt and concrete pavements with subsequent laying of new pavement, and sandblasting of existing reinforced concrete structures with subsequent coating with reinforcing compounds. These works are being carried out in the wet zone, so the works are scheduled for completion before the spring flood.

The architectural centrepiece, the special feature of the renovated embankment is the amphitheatre for 2,300 seats. At the end of 2021, the building concreting was finished, with 5,486 cubic metres of concrete placed in amphitheatre structures. The exterior and interior glazing of the amphitheatre building is 100% complete, and ventilated facades are being installed. In the artificial sheltered zone of the amphitheatre, a set of works has been completed to apply polymer coating for the folds of spectator stands – totalling about 2,480 square metres. Waterproofing of under-stage space and the roof of the amphitheatre has been completed; works are underway on the roof to lay granite paving cover.

Finishing works in the interior premises, and installation of electrical low-voltage systems, and water supply and sanitation systems continue in the amphitheatre building. Installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems is underway.

Works on construction of a concrete base for laying of paving stones have been completed in the area adjacent to the amphitheatre. Preparatory works are underway to arrange outdoor sports grounds for skateboarding and workout.

Repair works on the retaining walls of the middle and lower terraces are 40% complete. Installation of new fenders along the berth walls is about to be completed. 90% of the fenders have already been installed.

Project information:

A large-scale project for renovation of the lower terrace of the city embankment will be carried out for several years. In the course of works, the berth with an upper overpass and access road will be improved, the existing coast-protecting structures with stair flights will be restored and new ones will be built, and the surface of berth walls will also be restored.

Stroytransgaz Group will build an open 2,300-seat amphitheatre on the embankment, which will be accessible by a pedestrian crossing across the roadway. The project provides for improvement of the existing fountain and construction of four new fountains, as well as construction of utilities.

A 16.5 hectares park area will be located along the embankment. The project provides for recreation areas – a cycle lane and a skating area with special coating, a pavement network with the total length of 18 km. The lower terrace will feature a new lighting, video surveillance and public address system, as well as a parking lot for over 300 cars.
