Stroytransgaz Finished Construction of Gas Distribution Station on Sakhalin Island

Yuzhnaya Gas Distribution Station (GDS) is launched on Sakhalin Island. This construction project was carried out as part of Gazprom's large-scale program Gasification of Russian Regions.

Capacity of Yuzhnaya GDS is 170,800 m3/hour, the length of 325 mm gas pipeline branch line is 475 m. The GDS will be connected to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk circular gas pipeline and will supply residential houses, industrial and energy facilities of the Region, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and neighbouring settlements with “blue” fuel.

Yuzhnaya GDS has been under construction for about 1.5 years by Stroytransgaz. The construction took place in unique climatic conditions. Sakhalin Island is located in the area with seismicity of 9 points by Richter scale and is considered to be equivalent to the Far North. To compensate the seismic load, a large pile field was constructed: 407 piles were arranged and over 3,000 m3 of concrete were poured. Additional steel structures, which raised the block boxes over 3 metres high, protect them from high snow cover.

“Technologies are improving, capacities are increasing, there are new safety requirements, so each GDS is unique and there are no equivalents. Yuzhnaya GDS is unique in its performance, and also owing to its bright colours and relative proximity to the airport, it can be seen from planes flying over the city,” says Boris Nikolaevich Khomyak, Sakhalin Oblast Project Director of construction site.

In June 2023, all major construction and installation works were completed at the gas distribution station with the exception of landscaping, which will be completed by the end of the summer. The GDS is ready, commissioning works and individual tests were carried out. Necessary documentation was prepared and approved by Gazprom Gaznadzor LLC. The activities performed enabled gas delivery to the gas distribution station, and in the near future the GDS will be ready to supply gas to the consumer.

“Yuzhnaya GDS is one of the most powerful stations on Sakhalin. Once the gas is supplied to the GDS, it will improve quality of life and environmental situation in the region,” notes Boris Nikolaevich Khomyak.

For reference:

In 2020-2021, Stroytransgaz concluded EPC contracts with Gazprom Mezhregiongaz to build 11 gasification facilities with a total length of over 231 km, including 7 inter-settlement gas pipelines
and 4 gas pipeline branches and GDSs. 9 facilities have been completed.

To date, 230.8 km (100%) of gas pipelines have been welded and laid, and 23 (100%) gas distributors have been installed. Korsakov GDS, Yurievets GDS, Yuzhnaya GDS were installed and supplied with gas as well as works on shore reinforcement at the Tymovskoye inter-settlement gas pipeline were completed.
