Asphalt in the tunnel on Tupolev street in Zhukovsky has been laid

Tunnel under Gromov Square

Reconstruction of Tupolev Street, Zhukovsky is in full swing. Asphalting of the tunnel roadway under Gromov Square with a length of over 700 m has been completed. It is planned to start traffic along the main road and through the tunnel at the end of 2022. The work is being performed by Stroytransgaz Group.

“In total, 3.6 thousand tons of asphalt were laid, and in the near future we will commence the road marking. The external and internal finishing of the tunnel, installation of internal utilities, and lighting are in progress as well,” Alexei Gerzhik, Minister of Transport of the Moscow Region, clarified.

The tunnel will become a part of a new two-level interchange. The reconstructed 2.7 km section lies between the road interchange at the intersection of Tupolev Street and the Tupolevskoye highway, and the bridge across the Khripan River. The highway’s main road will be expanded to 4-6 lanes, and 5 elevated pedestrian crossings will be built to ensure safe and comfortable movement of citizens; access for people with limited mobility will be provided.

“Thus, the issue of traffic jams is completely resolved. Previously, traffic was organized in 2 lanes, but now Tupolev Street will have 4 lanes along the direct transit section. Plus, over Gromov Square, over the tunnel, there are 4 traffic lanes, two on each of the alternate routes,” Andrey Khromets, Project Delivery Director of Stroytransgaz JSC, said.

About 250 workers and 25 units of machinery are engaged in work on a daily basis. It contributes to the high pace of roadway expansion, alternate route laying, construction of elevated pedestrian crossings and reconstruction of utilities.

The project is part of the Russian national project called Safe and High-Quality Roads. The estimated speed of traffic without traffic lights along the reconstructed street will be 70 km/h, and the intensity is about 50,000 cars per day. The time of travel along the previously problematic section will be reduced to 10 minutes, and it will be possible to get to the Novoryazanskoye highway in 15–20 minutes.
