Concreting of spillway dam slabs is underway at the construction site of the Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex

The construction of the Bagayevsky Hydroelectric Complex, a transportation infrastructure facility that is important not only for the South of Russia, but for the country as a whole, continues in the Rostov region. The Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex is designed to address the navigation bottleneck on the Lower Don, providing the necessary dimensions of the waterway. The Project is executed by Stroytransgaz Group of Companies.

The main structures, shipping lock, and spillway dam of the future hydroelectric complex are being constructed near the village of Arpachin, Rostov region. Dewatering to lower the groundwater level and soil removal continues in the lock excavation pit. Wellpoint systems are used for this purpose – pumping units consisting of wellpoints, a water collector and a pumping unit.

Works on arrangement of upper and lower approach channels with mooring and guiding facilities to ensure safe passage of ships are in progress. The mooring facilities of Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex are designed as an anchored bulwark made of Larsen sheet piling. The mooring structure end sections have curvilinear shape. More than 4700 pieces of Larsen sheet have been sunk.

Pouring and concreting of the spillway dam sections with a total length of 307 meters is in progress. Each of the 12 sections measures 35 by 24 meters. The dam is designed to pass floods and regulate navigational water discharges. More than 180 tons of reinforcement and 2,700 cubic meters of concrete mix are used for each section.

Concreting of vertical parts of retaining walls is being completed at the head control gate of the fish pass and spawning channel. Waterproofing of external surfaces in contact with the backfill is in progress. Reinforcement and concreting of apron slabs, as well as abutments and piers are in progress.

The site employs:

813 people.

114 pirces of equipment

The work is being performed round the clock.

The Federal State Unitary Enterprise Rostransmodernizatsiya is the state customer of the project.

Project background:

The Bagayevsky Hydroelectric Complex is the most important infrastructure project not only for Rostov Region, but also for the whole country. The hydroelectric complex under construction will be composed of a shipping lock with a central control room, upper and lower approach channels with mooring-guiding structures, a spillway and earth fill dam, a meandering fish bypass and spawning channel and a fish passage lock, industrial, service, engineering and auxiliary facilities, and housing for operating personnel. To ensure the navigation safety, channel-regulating dams are being constructed, as well as shore protection dams that will prevent the development of bank erosion processes (washout and collapse), protect from the impact of ship waves and reduce the negative impact of waters on the population living in these areas. In order to ensure guaranteed waterway dimensions (depth – 4 m, width – 80 m, bending radius – 500 m) in the section from the Kochetovsky Hydroelectric Complex site at km 3004.5 of the waterway of the Integrated Deep Water System (IDWS) to the Bagaevsky Hydroelectric Complex site at km 3089 of the IDWS waterway, dredging and river cut-off are envisaged.
