Asphalt Laying with Preliminary Bridge Surface Heating with Zmey Gorynych Thermal Heater

The works on construction of the asphalt concrete surfacing on the bridge over the Chusovaya river were completed in Perm Krai. Two layers of asphalt concrete surfacing 11 cm thick were laid on the artificial structure of 1.5 km length. The traffic on the new bridge is scheduled to start before the end of this year. The work is being performed by Stroitransgaz GC.

Construction of the pavement was completed on the bridge over the Chusovaya river, which is one of the largest transportation facilities in Perm Krai. High tech innovative asphalt concrete mixtures with higher resistance to weather and climatic factors and impacts from vehicle loads were used as the material. The lower and upper layers of asphalt concrete surfacing were made of stone matrix mixture that has a high wearing capacity, stability against crack and rut formation, as well as noise attenuating effect. PG 70-40 bitumen binding substance was used as part of the mixture, due to which the works could be done in the late autumn period at the negative air temperatures.

Zmey Gorynych thermal heater, a machine designed to dry constructive layers of pavement structure (bases and surfacing) under unfavourable weather conditions, was used to heat the surface of the bridge road bed before laying the layers of asphalt concrete surfacing. It allows for efficient removal of moisture, snow and ice formations. The use of this special machine allows laying the asphalt concrete mixture at air temperatures down to -10 °С , which reduces the downtime periods between the seasons, when performing road construction operations.

Therefore, before commissioning the new bridge over the Chusovaya River, the works left to be done were the installation of control joints on supports No. 1, No. 5 and No. 14, installation of metal barrier and pedestrian fencing, laying of asphalt concrete surfacing on the foot walk, construction of pavement structure at the junction of the motor road approach and bridge on the right-hand bank.

Construction of pavement structure at the junction of the motor road approach and bridge on the left-hand bank was fully completed as of today. The traffic over the new bridge is expected to start in 2022. As soon as this happens, Stroytransgaz GC will commence improvement of the existing bridge. About one thousand people and 150 units of machinery are engaged in operations on a daily basis.

Stroytransgaz GC builds a bridge across the Chusovaya River in the Perm Krai. The bridge under construction will become part of the Moscow – Kazan – Perm – Khanty-Mansiysk – Surgut – Tomsk transport route. When commissioned, the bridge will help eliminate traffic jams at the river crossing and ease the traffic. The new bridge is a twin of the existing one. It will be located 18 meters away from the existing bridge. The length of the new four-lane bridge is 1.5 km. The project also provides for the reconstruction of an interchange in the area of Palniki village; new interchanges will appear at the intersection of Solikamsk highway with Korsunskaya Street, as well as between the Vostochny Bypass and Tsimlyanskaya Street.
