Repair Works at Kolyma Highway

Stroytransgaz Gruop is improving Kolyma R-504 federal highway that goes from Yakutsk to Magadan. The works are performed as a part of Safe and High-Quality Roads Russian national project.

The section is located in the Khasynsky Distsrict of Magadan Region and has a length of 10 km (from 1821 to 1831 km). By now, operations on rock ground handling are in progress. This includes blasting to remove rock and permafrost soils, as their thawing could cause the road to collapse or subside.

150,000 cubic metres of earth bed has been backfilled by July 2023. Excavation operations, laying and tamping of rocky ground are carried out as per the project design. Once the work is completed, the traffic load will be evenly distributed along the highway.

Two culverts were installed at the reconstruction site, and the first 20 cm layer of pavement was completed along one kilometre of the road. Magadan Region is located in a zone of high seismic activity, therefore, special materials are used during construction works, which will ensure safety and durability of artificial structures and the highway.

The works are carried out 24 hours a day involving 100 people and 40 units of equipment.

Upon completion of 10 km section, the road radius, gradient curvature, pavement and assigned category will change. Access roads to all settlements along Kolyma federal highway will be asphalted.

For reference:

Magadan Region is located in the Far North-East of Russia. Development of reliable transportation infrastructure is required to strengthen the social and economic position of the region and to attract investments. Significant expenses to ensure northern seasonal freight delivery are a special issue for Magadan Region.

Upon completion of the works, traffic intensity in the section will be about two thousand vehicles a day.
