Russia’s President solemnly opened a section of the Vostok M-12 Highway

On Friday, September 8, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin launched traffic on the M-12 Federal Highway from Moscow to Arzamas. The opening of the big project was attended by Marat Khusnullin, Deputy Chairman of the Government, Vitaly Savelyev, Minister of Transport, Vyacheslav Petushenko, Chairman of the Board of Avtodor State Corporation, the Governors of Moscow City, Moscow, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod Regions, Dmitry Lebedev, Stroytransgaz CEO, Dmitry Deringer, Deputy CEO for Infrastructure Construction, other heads of contractors, students of road specialties, and builders.

Stroytransgaz is the General Contractor for the first section of the M-12 Moscow–Nizhny Novgorod–Kazan Highway. The project is commissioned by Avtodor, a public company.

The leader of the nation expressed his gratitude to the M-12 builders for working ahead of schedule, noting that they are doing excellent while fulfilling huge tasks.

"Today, we are opening quite a number of major road facilities. Multiple sections of the future M-12 Vostok Highway spanning more than 300 kilometers overall are being put into operation as the same time. As a result, Moscow and Arzamas will be linked via a modern high-speed highway. It will sensibly cut - halve - the travel time between the cities," stressed Vladimir Putin.

In December 2022, Stroytransgaz built and commissioned 48 km of the 1st start-up complex of Phase I of the M-12 Highway. In September 2023, traffic was launched on 32km of the 2nd start-up complex of Phase I. In total, Phase I of the highway is 80 kilometers long. The section spans from the intersection with the A-108 Moscow Big Ring federal highway to the M-7 Volga Federal Highway. M-12 will be a Category 1 road with 4 lanes, 2 in each direction. The design speed is about 120 kilometers per hour.

Since the beginning of works on the 2nd start-up complex more than 31 km of pavement, 1,825 lighting towers, 24 video surveillance masts, and 567 road signs were installed. 432,000 tons of asphalt concrete was laid onto the roadbed. Storm sewer works are complete, with 22.5km built. A total of 16 bridges and overpasses were built, including 5 bridge crossings and 1 pedestrian underpass.

The company brought all its resources to the M-12 project such as highly qualified specialists, state-of-the-art equipment, and modern technologies. About 2,200 workers and 500 units of equipment were involved in the construction. The work was carried out in two shifts.

The highway will be a part of the Europe– Western China international route.

The Project is expected to deliver, among others, the following: wider use of Russian Federation transit potential and development of transport services export; higher economic efficiency of cargo and passenger transportation; promotion of social and economic development of the regions in the Project impact area; expansion of technologies and innovations import and export in construction and operation of transport and storage infrastructure; growth in foreign investments into Russia’s economy, etc.
