Laying of the Surface Course Has Begun on the M-12 Highway

Stroytransgaz Group is carrying out the construction of Phase 1 of the M-12 Highway. The length of construction Phase 1 is 80 km. To ensure quality and durability of the future mega-route, the pavement will have 3 asphalt concrete layers. Currently, work has begun on laying the surface course, which is the last in the “road pie”.

In total, as part of the first phase this year it is planned to lay 150,000 tons of surface course for the asphalt concrete pavement. The builders will lay about 5,000 tons daily. The course thickness is 5 cm.

The work uses SMA-16 mixture. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it is adapted to the road’s actual transport and operational characteristics and to climatic conditions of the work site. This mixture has resistance to rutting and increased crack resistance.

The pavement base course and the subgrade top layer are being laid as well, their thickness is 9 cm and 14 cm, respectively. Thus, the total thickness of the asphalt concrete pavement will be 28 cm. This will ensure the road strength and reliability, increase its service life, and ensure comfortable and safe passage for vehicles.

To date, 40 km of subgrade top layer and 31 km of pavement base course have been laid on the entire section of Phase 1. All asphalt mixes are produced at 4 plants of the company, which were built specifically for the project near the work site.

The M-12 Highway is of strategic importance for Russia. It will provide for high-speed motor service between the largest centers of economic growth in the Central, Volga, and Ural Federal Districts and improve the safety and quality of motor road traffic in the regions. Besides, the high-speed route will ensure a stable annual increase in GRP of the regional constituent entities where the highway will pass, by lifting infrastructural restrictions and materializing the economic potential of individual cities and agglomerations.
